Chatafisha Creating a Circular Economy in Africa through Blockchain and DAOs

April 10, 2023

Key Insights

  • Chatafisha, operating as a Decentralized Autonomous Organization (DAO), aims to create a circular economy in Africa by using blockchain technology to decentralize waste management, incentivizing plastic waste collection and recycling into high-value products like eco-bricks.
  • Chatafisha aligns with the three principles of the circular economy—eliminating waste, circulating materials at high value, and regenerating nature—by implementing projects like Fucha Bins and Rangi Chanya Festival, which transform plastic waste into eco-bricks used for construction and environmental improvement.
  • hatafisha promotes the 3Rs of waste hierarchy—reduce, reuse, recycle—by creating smart bins for plastic recycling, repurposing waste into raw materials for construction, and using a blockchain-based plastic offset system to encourage and verify recycling efforts.

Primer

UNDP introduced Tanzania’s Growth Stage Impact Ventures (GSIV) program In July 2022 to promote the adoption of circular economies.

The Tanzania SDG Investor Map offered insights into five sectors, which align with national development priorities and one pressing issue identified was sustainable waste management. The shortlisted companies included Chanzi, Ensol, and Kilimo Fresh.

Although not shortlisted, Chatifisha is noteworthy for its blockchain-based approach. It operates as a Decentralized Autonomous Organization (DAO) that empowers African communities using art, technology, and sustainability practices.

It aims to create a circular economy in Africa. It empowers communities to use underutilized urban spaces sustainably.

How Has Chatafisha Achieved the Principles of Circular Economy?

Chatafisha meets the three principles of the circular economy, which are to eliminate waste and pollution, circulate products and materials at their highest value, and regenerate nature. Here are some examples of how it aligns with these principles:

  1. Eliminate waste and pollution: Chatafisha focuses on reducing plastic waste. The Fucha Bins project involves collecting and recycling plastic waste into eco-bricks. Again, the Litter Token pilot incentivizes waste pickers to collect bottles that would otherwise harm the environment.
  2. Circulate products and materials at their highest value: Chatafisha has developed a plastic offsetting mechanism that uses blockchain technology to decentralize its Fucha Bins. Thus, bins are tokenized and backed with plastic credits. This information is stored on-chain. The system helps to recycle the collected plastic into regenerative products, like eco-bricks and furniture. Besides, the Rangi Chanya Festival project adds value to plastic waste by converting it into eco-bricks. Then, it rebuilt a school in Ndumbwi using eco-bricks. It also revamped surrounding walls and areas using these value-added bricks. As a result, it circulates eco-bricks at high value to facilitate construction and commercial activities.
  3. Regenerate nature: Chatafisha works towards a sustainable, regenerative economy. The Rangi Chanya Festival project adds value to plastic waste for school reconstruction and area improvement.

How Has Chatafisha Achieved the 3Rs of Waste Hierarchy?

Chatafisha’s DAO approach aims to reduce, reuse, and recycle waste through various examples:

Reducing waste: Chatafisha creates sustainable “smart” bins for plastic recycling. It places these bins in strategic spots and also incentivizes individuals and organizations to adopt its sustainable recycling solution.

Reusing waste: The Fucha Bins pilot project collects plastic and recycles it into raw materials for classrooms, shelters, and chairs. Therefore, its efforts reduce the need for new materials.

Recycling waste: Chatafisha recycles waste using a plastic offset system. which tokenizes bins and back them with verified plastic credits on-chain. This encourages plastic waste collection and recycling.

Chatafisha uses an innovative approach combines decentralized governance and eco-friendly practices. As a result, it has transformed underutilized spaces and empowered disadvantaged communities in Tanzania besides aligning with SDGs #8, #11, and #13. It is a future DAO for sustainable Africa
